In 2002, pre-tax sales of all publications in Japan dropped 0.6% over the previous year to ¥2.3 trillion, according to a survey by the Research Institute for Publications. The figure has been decreasing since 1997 when it recorded the first drop since the survey started in 1950. Of the total ¥2.3 trillion sales, ¥949 billion was for books and ¥1.36 trillion for periodicals (¥1.02 trillion for monthlies and ¥0.34 trillion for weeklies). The total number of copies sold also decreased 2% from 2001 to 3.96 billion, including 739 million books and 3.22 billion periodicals.
