The fuel cell (FC) is expected to become the energy source for the next generation. At a time when automakers' development and practical application of FCs is attracting attention, the R&D race is heating up for smaller and longer-lasting FCs for portable electronic devices such as laptops and cellular phones. Large-sized FC systems can act as power generators, and middle-and small-sized ones are also able to provide both power and heat, if installed, for example, in office buildings or homes. How soon can this clean, highly effective and energy-saving power generating system be put into practical use? What are the prospects of cost reduction? While the technological development, standardization and other efforts to put FCs into wide use are under way, how advanced is Japanese technological development? On these issues, FPC has invited Mr. Masaki Ikematsu, General Manager, Fuel Cell Research & Development Dep't., NIPPON OIL CORPORATION, to share his views with us.
