- Facilitating Foreign Press Reporting in Japan
The Foreign Press Center/Japan (FPCJ) facilitates news gathering by the foreign press in Japan and dissemination of information from Japan to other countries through the media.
The FPCJ was established in 1976 as a nonprofit foundation through funding provided by the Nihon Shimbun Kyokai (Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association) and the former Keidanren (now Nippon Keidanren [Japan Business Federation]). Since then, the FPCJ has supported foreign news-gathering organizations in reporting on Japan and thereby promoted accurate understanding of Japan in other countries. In 2011, the FPCJ was registered as a public interest incorporated foundation.
There are currently 551 reporters affiliated with 179 media organizations from 31 countries and regions working in Japan to transmit news from Japan to the world (data gathered by the FPCJ as of March 1, 2011; for list by country/region, click here). Many journalists from foreign media organizations also visit Japan for news gathering.
The FPCJ is actively engaged in getting information sent out from Japan to the world. It handles various types of inquiries and requests for assistance for individual reporting from the foreign press, organizes and carries out press briefings and press tours, and operates an invitation program for foreign journalists.

Providing Facilities for the Foreign Press
The FPCJ office (Nippon Press Center Building 6f) has a Conference Room (auditorium-style, 50 seats with tables), a meeting room that can be used for interviews (with 12 seats around a table), and work booths with Internet connection. These facilities are available for use by foreign press members for their news reporting activities. The office also has a section that displays and distributes FPCJ materials, as well as press handouts from the central and local governments, companies, and other organizations, and a library with English-language books on Japan.
